COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019): An acronym used to label the illness people suffer after coming in contact with the virus known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2.
SARS CoV-2: The virus that causes the so called COVID-19.
Virus: A biological entity that can only reproduce within a host. Viruses possess nucleic acids (either DNA or RNA, not both) encased within a protective protein coat. These entities are able to infect all forms of life, ranging from bacteria to humans. (Video explanation).
Coronavirus: A large variety of viruses that cause respiratory infections ranging from mild to lethal. Coronaviruses are found in mammals (us humans) and birds. The two most pathogenic (capable of causing disease), SARS-CoV & MERS CoV cause severe respiratory syndrome while the other four (HCoV-NL63, HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43 and HKU) only cause mild respiratory problems in a healthy person. Current research says that coronaviruses found in humans have originated in bats or rats, and found their way to humans via an intermediate host. The intermediate host in SARS is believed to have been a civet (cat like animal in China), and in the case of MERS, it is believed to have been a camel.
Vaccine: A substance injected into the body to cause it to produce antibodies and so provide immunity against a disease. (Oxford English Dictionary, 2010)

Emergency Use Authorisation: A regulatory body such as the FDA in the United States of America or the TGA in Australia will “. . . allow the use of unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved products in an emergency to diagnose, treat or prevent serious or life threatening diseases or conditions . . .”
PCR Test: The procedure used to test for traces of the Cars Cov-2 virus in humans. It basically takes a sample of your cells and amplifies any DNA to look for ‘viral sequences’, i.e. bits of non-human DNA that seem to match parts of a known viral genome . . . It uses ‘amplification’ which means taking a very very tiny amount of DNA and growing it exponentially until it can be analysed. Obviously any minute contaminations in the sample will also be amplified leading to potentially gross errors of discovery.
